Meet Popular Girl: Ally Maki

Oct 9, 2018

If you haven’t seen “Wrecked”, you need to! The hilarious show is about a group of plane crash survivors that are stuck on a remote island and they have to adapt to life without social media, WiFi, indoor plumbing, and of course Chipotle!  They just finished season 3, and we really hope there is a season 4!

Ally is also in another Popular TV favorite, “Cloak and Dagger.” We were so excited to catch up with her in LA and ask her some of our exclusive questions.

Tell us about your show Wrecked, and your character, Jess?

If you have not seen Wrecked yet, I urge you to binge through the first two seasons. Not only is it funny, but it is jam packed with action, adventure and some very genuinely relatable moments. Jess really goes through it this season. She is put in a precarious situation where she must question everything she knows, her reality and the future of her relationship. All while throwing down some very major girl power action.

Is it fun being on a modern superhero show (Cloak and Dagger)? Tell us about the show and your character Mina Hess.

Mina is a brilliant environmental engineer who, over the course of season 1, becomes a mentor and true friend for Tandy. These two girls really represent supportive and intellectual female friendships, which I find so beautiful. Joining the Marvel Universe as a well rounded, passionate and strong female character has been a dream and I am beyond grateful for every moment. I am truly having the time of my life.

How are you and Mina/ Jess similar, how are you different?

Both characters have a strong sense of what they believe in. That really inspires me. It’s something that has driven me from the very start in the entertainment industry. Mina’s wish to save the world through science overrides any limitations and barriers that exist for her. She’s a definite powerhouse. Jess is also not afraid to speak up, albeit sometimes she does so too passionately and makes mistakes on her terms. We’re different in that both are very confident physically. I have learned so much from our awesome stunt teams.

Dream concert ticket (any band, any decade)?
Japan. 1998. Mariah Carey’s Butterfly World Tour.

Favorite Artist?
There’s so many, but Drake has kept my interest the longest.

Karaoke Anthem?
“Wannabe” – Spice Girls

Favorite Movie?
Inside Out. Goofball island forever. ✌

Favorite snack?
Movie popcorn & Hi-Chew

TV addiction?
Terrace House. It’s basically the Japanese version of Real World.

Last fashion item purchased?
A teal vintage inspired Fendi strap. Gave my bag a brand new life.

Three people—dead or alive, real or fictional—that you’d like to invite to dinner?
I fantasize about getting all three female generations of my family at one table and asking them every question I can possibly think of. My mom Judy, my grandma Miyo and my Great Grandmother Maki.

Do you have a party trick?
I do a pretty mean robot.

Tell us a secret?
Despite what people may tell you, you can do and be anything you want in this world.

What does popular mean to you?
Popularity is a word that I’ve struggled finding meaning in over my life. It’s all internal though. Finding what is true to you ignites a fire in your soul or anything you firmly believe in.

Can you tell us about any shows or projects you have coming up?
Make sure you watch “Wrecked” every Tuesday night at 10/9c on TBS! Also, you can stream all of season 1 of Marvel’s “Cloak and Dagger” on Hulu and the Freeform app. Be on the lookout for something I’m designing with an incredible artist that should be out soon. Majorly from my heart.
