Popular Girl: Paulina Chávez

Etc.

Mar 5, 2020

Paulina Chávez or Ashley Garcia as she’s known in “The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia”, sat down to talk to us about her new role, what it means to her to be Latina, and Ricky Martin? You can check it all out here in her feature below!

1. Tell us about your character Ashley and The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia?

“The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia” is about 15 ½ year old Latina who is the youngest person to ever earn a Ph.D. in both robotics and applied mathematics.  She gets her dream job at JPL to make robots for NASA! Ashley moves in with her uncle Victor (Jencarlos Canela) in Pasadena far away from her over-protective mother. Ashley is hoping to get a chance to have a fun normal teenage experience by fulfilling her bucket list, which includes getting her first kiss.

2.  How are you and your character similar? And how are you different?

I am similar to Ashley in several ways. We are both Latinas who have been focusing on training to pursue our careers and in order to be able to follow my dreams I was homeschooled and missed out on the high school experience. Ashley focused on school and earning her Ph.D. Ashley moved across the country to work at JPL in Pasadena and I also moved from Texas to Los Angeles to work on the Netflix series and follow my dreams. Also, our moms are very overprotective just like every Latina loving mom!

3.   What does being Latina mean to you?

Being Latina is super important to me because I believe it is crucial for people to see Latinos as positive influencers and role models. I want for the Latinx community to have an opportunity to see themselves in strong captivating roles on TV and film in Hollywood. I’m fortunate to be part of that goal with Ashley Garcia.

4. What did you learn during this role?

This was a live action multi-cam comedy. I had never worked or seen how this process worked. I learned about the entire process of shooting a multi-cam show. It was impressive to be surrounded by such a talented cast and crew.

5.    What was your favorite part about going to set?

So many favorites, but I believe the best part were the live audience shows. Watching the audience dance, sing and laugh with us was a great way to interact. Also… the delicious craft service!

6. If there was one thing from LA that you could take back home what would it be?

The beautiful weather!

7. Top 3 foods?

shrimp ceviche, poblano mac-n-cheese, tacos de bistek

8. If you could plan the perfect day, what would it be?

I’m the happiest when I go to set and work on a project, but I also love to spend time at home watching movies, relaxing and taking it easy.

9.    An embarrassing moment?

I think I have blocked off any possible embarrassing moment. The only one I always remember is when I got out of the car and tore my skirt’s slit all the way up. I had to carry my purse and my friends purse to cover the slit.

10. Your proudest moment?

Right now, my proudest moment is the release of “The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia”!

11.  Go to karaoke song?

Bohemian Rhapsody

12. Favorite Concert?

Ricky Martin

13. Three people—dead or alive, real or fictional—that you’d like to invite to dinner?

Selena Quintanilla, Dolores Huerta, Wonder Woman

14. What does Popular mean to you?

Popular means to be a positive role model who shares their knowledge and experience to help others reach their highest potential.

15. Can you tell us about any other projects you have coming up?

Right now I’m enjoying the release and promoting “The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia”. I have a couple of projects in the works, but nothing finalized.
