From the small screen to the silver screen, Madagascar-born actor Faly Rakotohavana is quickly making a name for himself after the release of Disney+ Secret Society of Second-Born Royals  late last month. The movie follows five second-born royals who are in for the journey of a lifetime as they are blindsided when told that it is now their solemn duty to protect the world. Faly plays Prince Matteo, the strong silent type with a unique power that may really bug some people.

Previous to SSOSBR, Faly was known for his on screen roles in Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn and Raven’s Home.

Popular TV chatted with Faly about his new role, Zoom University, and future birthday plans.

1. Congrats on your role as Matteo in Disney’s Secret Society of Second-Born Royals. Tell us about your character.

Matteo is probably the most awkward person on the planet. He is super shy and meek but he is very smart! He struggles with confidence and throughout the film that’s what he works to gain.

2. Which of the second-born royals do you most relate to?

I relate to January in some ways. All she wants is a chance to prove herself so she can show the world that she is capable of much more than just being a Second Born. I feel that a lot of the time, that’s how a lot of actors feel. We go to every audition and casting call hoping that we finally get the opportunity to prove ourselves.

3. What was the hardest part of this role?

I am the complete opposite of Matteo, so learning to play him was a bit difficult because I had to learn what it felt like to be secluded and left out. I love hanging out with my friends and getting to meet new people, so I kind of had to push that all away so I could understand more of what Matteo feels.

4. There were so many stunts involved in the making of this movie. What kind of training would you like to do on your next project?

All the stunt training we did was so fun! But, if we had to do one more thing I would want to do some combat training! Learning some boxing or wrestling would be really fun.

5. What genre is your dream role in?

Horror! I love horror movies and I actually got to be in a horror anthology with Mick Garris. It was so much fun! I would definitely love to have roles in more horror movies or thrillers. I love slasher films so getting to be in a slasher film would be a dream come true.

6. As someone who is a part of Gen Z, what is something you’re tired of hearing about “your generation”?

That we have it so easy. It is a little tiresome hearing that we have it so easy since not very many people outside of Gen Z understand the pressures that we face. I admit that we do have advantages that they didn’t have back then, but we still struggle with things and hearing that we have it so easy definitely doesn’t help us.

 7. When and what made you decide to start acting?

I’ve always wanted to be an actor for as long as I can remember. I’d always wanted to see myself on my TV, and if my younger self could watch all the stuff I have done he would probably cry for hours. Tears of joy of course.

8. What is a question you wish you got asked more?

What is your favorite food?  My favorite food depends on the mood I am in. I love pasta, tacos, and teriyaki chicken. Occasionally I can eat sloppy joes because they are really good but they’re not my go-to.  The one thing I can never eat no matter the mood I am in is anything seafood. I do not like seafood. When it comes to dessert I’m usually okay with just a couple of mochis…especially Green Tea Mochi!

9. After celebrating your 17th birthday in quarantine, if you could do anything for your 18th,what would it be?

A road trip to Vegas! I want to celebrate 18 in Vegas because that just sounds absolutely insane! I’ve always wanted to have a birthday in Vegas, and since I was locked up in my house for the last one, hopefully I can do something crazy for 18.

10. You’ve shared your thoughts about Zoom University on TikTok. If you could add one class to the roster, what would it be?

Probably animation! I’ve always wanted to understand how they make all those cool animated movies, and getting to help make one would be really cool.

11. What was the hardest adjustment you made moving from Madagascar to the U.S.?

I think just getting used to American society because it is vastly different! Learning to hang out with different kids and learning what is and is not socially acceptable was something that I struggled with a lot. The movie was a long time ago though, and I feel like I have adjusted pretty well.

12. What was the last text you sent?

The last text I sent was to my friend Dean! “Wait what? We have homework?”

13. Tell us a secret?

In third grade, there was this girl that would always brag about her super cool pencil that smelled like lemonade. She like actually had a pencil that gave off the scent of lemonade and she would go around and shove it under people’s noses. I got tired of it and stole it, threw it away, and never told anybody! I hope she doesn’t read this and remember because that would be awkward.

14. What does popular mean to you?

I think popularity is the idea of being loved by more than just yourself. As long as you keep your friends and family close, you will always be popular. I think being popular amongst your friends and family is the best form of popularity.

15. Can you tell us about any other projects you have coming up?

Because of COVID-19, things have really slowed down so I can’t really talk about upcoming work, but I am excited for what the future has in store for me and I can’t wait for everyone to see it all.

If you’re planning to keep up with Faly (and you should) you can keep up with him on Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok and be sure to catch him in the Disney+ original, Secret Society of Second-Born Royals.
