Popular Tween: Ariana Greenblatt
Aug 21, 2020
There aren’t many actors who can say that they’ve starred in multiple Walt Disney productions from Marvel to the new Disney+ platform. Just five years into her career, young tween starlet, Ariana Greenblatt has already made a name for herself from the iconic fan favorite Infinity War as Young Gamora to a Young Nina in the film adaptation of Lin Manuel-Miranda’s ‘In The Heights’ set to release in 2021.
More recently (today in fact), Ariana is standing with the release of her new project The One and Only Ivan, an adaptation of the New York Times best-selling and Newbury Award winning novel produced by Angelina Jolie. In anticipation of the release, Ariana spoke with us about her favorite roles, dream project, and what to expect from the young star.
1. You’re only 12 and you’ve already had so many iconic roles from Young Gamora, Matilda, Young Velma, and Young Nina in the upcoming ‘In The Heights’ film! What has been your favorite so far?
It’s so impossible, but if I had to choose one it would be Matilda in “Awake”. I wanted this role so bad and worked extremely hard to get it. Once I did, it didn’t disappoint. Playing Gina Rodriguez’s daughter was honestly one of the best experiences in my professional like. I can’t wait to see how it turns out but that cast and time up in Toronto, I’ll never forget it.
2. What can you tell us about ‘The One and Only Ivan’?
I was a big fan of the book and everything about this movie was big. Big cast, Disney and living in London for over two months! It’s such a special book to so many people and to be a part of its story is honestly unbelievable. I really think things happen for a reason and with everything going on in the world right now, to be able to sit with your family at home and watch this beautiful, fun story is just what I think everyone could use right now. I was 10 years old when I filmed it and I’m now 13 so a lot of time has passed. I’m just so thrilled to finally have it out and be a part of Ivan’s history.
3. Was ‘Stuck in the Middle’ at all like your home life?
If your home life meant having 7 brothers and sisters then yea! Lol. Stuck captured a lot of what families go through and how the dynamics change as you get older. Playing the youngest and some would say the toughest of the Diaz clan really changed my life. I mean, to this day people come up to me and tell me how much the show means to them or how much they love Daphne. It’s special and something I’ll never take for granted and yes I still have Deathnee and blue fairy. She sits safely in my room.
4. Many people also may not know that not only were you on DWTS Juniors, but you made it to the finals! What was that experience like?
So crazy right?! I started DWTSjr pretty much right after I got home from England from shooting The One and Only Ivan. It was intense! First off, I have never done anything in front of a live studio audience before except my first gig at 6 when I guested on Liv and Maddie so that was crazy. It’s like entering the Thunder Dome. I got really lucky being partnered with Artyon Celestine who to this day remains a real friend and our mentor Brandon Armstrong just had so much love and patience for us. We really kept ourselves laughing and having a good time but it was a lot of work. My goal was to make it to the finals which we did, but make no mistake, we really wanted to win. It wasn’t meant to be! I’m glad I did it though, especially the very first season ever. Everyone remembers the first season of something, right? But that was a wild way to end that summer.
5. What is a question you wish you got asked more?
“Ariana, tell us something we don’t know about you.”
6. What do you remember from your first acting role?
OMG, I was so excited that I was actually going to be on Disney Channel and that I was going to be on my favorite Disney Channel show., Liv and Maddie! For this 6 year old girl at the time it was mind-blowing. I’ll never forget that time and my love for Dove and Jessie still exists today. It’s nothing but hugs and kisses when we bump into each other. I love them so much it’s hard to describe. We will be friends forever. I’m sure of it.
7. What were you doing right before this interview?
Another phone interview and TikTok videos. Lol
8. When did you realize you wanted to be an actor?
I love performing and have always been doing it. It started with dance in the beginning and doing funny impressions at home. I was early on the whole Miranda Sings thing and use to love going around imitating her. HA
9. Outside of acting, what are you passionate about?
Good question! I love pottery. I can lose myself for hours in silence on a pottery wheel. I love experimenting with makeup and making tutorials. I think that I have gotten really good at that. Also, rescuing dogs. If I was allowed to have more, God knows how many I would have but I have been blessed with two girls Luna and Foxy. I recently learned had to edit my own videos so I put up my own YouTube channel. It’s silly and fun and art! I also am a huge fan of collecting contemporary art and creating my own.
10. What is the hardest acting scene you have done so far?
There are some intensely emotional scenes in “Awake” and I can’t wait for that one to come out. It is a Netflix original film I did with Gina Rodriguez.
11. Shuffle all of your music. What are the first five songs that come up?
Billie Eilish “Everything I Wanted”, Frank Ocean “Godspeed”, Rex Orange County “Corduroy Dreams” , Oasis “Wonderwall” and Crowded House “Don’t Dream It’s Over”
12. What is your dream role?
Something like what Natalie Portman did in “The Professional” I loved that movie and that character!
13. What does popular mean to you?
Being accepted for who you are and being known for what you love to do.
14. Which of your upcoming projects are you most excited to see come out and why?
I’m really excited for “Awake” next year. It’s something I worked really hard on was a big challenge and I’m really proud of it.
15. If you could play the younger version of anyone in Hollywood, who would it be and why?
I can think of a lot of people that I would love to work with but their younger versions…that’s hard. You guys tell me who you would like for me to play the younger version of! Haha
