CIRCA WAVES IS THE SECOND COMING OF ARCTIC MONKEYS
Sep 4, 2015
Remember how you felt the first time you heard Arctic Monkeys’ “I Bet You Look Good On The DanceFloor?” British band Circa Waves will basically take you down a road of nostalgia with their rock-heavy jams. Influenced by high-energy bands like Arcade Fire, The Libertines and (obviously) Arctic Monkeys, the four-piece’s catchy choruses and drum-heavy tracks have been buzzing since the release of their hit track “T-Shirt Weather.”
Last year, the band gained U.S. attention playing alongside pop chanteuse Ryn Weaver during CMJ, but went a bit silent afterwards even after getting a ton of love after the festival. The band re-surfaced stateside this year at Lollapalooza in a big way, and now, it looks like Circa Waves is going to be on music listeners’ radars with their full-length finally hitting the U.S. If you thought “T-Shirt Weather” was catchy, just wait until you hear the rest of the band’s tunes.
Circa Waves’ debut record Young Chasers is due stateside on September 18 via Virgin Records. They’ll be hitting the road with MS MR this fall.
Check out their Austin tour video for viral hit “T-Shirt Weather,” and see how the band has been adjusting to life on the road before their album release.
On their “T-Shirt Weather” tour video: We’ve done a few tour videos for various things, but I think it gives people a good insight into what we’re really about and what we’re into.
Maintaining the hype from CMJ: We went out to CMJ to play our first couple of shows to introduce ourselves to America and then we had so much stuff going on in the UK because we released the record over there. We were so busy over there that we didn’t have time to come back until SXSW. I think now we’ve laid the groundwork to play some pretty cool shows there.
Best tour experience: I think the first time we played a song live and people screamed the words back to us in Reading and Leeds at the festival we played. It was the song “T-Shirt Weather. I wrote that song in my living room with a cup of tea. To watch 10,000 people scream those words back at me on tour is incredible. It’s such an amazing feeling. That was probably my favorite experience that happened while we were on the road.
Most embarrassing moment: We’ve tripped on stage. Our bass player has tripped a few times. I once jumped down on stage in Belgium and I couldn’t get back to the stage. I was stuck down on the floor, which was pretty embarrassing. I scrambled my way back up, but for a moment it looked quite ridiculous.
Must-listen to track on their album: I would say “Lost It,” which is really cool. It’s one of the slower ones, but it has this Pavement/Slacker chord progression. I think it’s one of our coolest songs. It has a big chorus, so I think people will be into it. The song is about a particular night out when I lost faith in all the people around me. I was out on the town and I was with undesirable people. I thought, I don’t want to be around these people anymore. It’s about losing faith in your hometown.
A lesson learned: We’ve really learned to play every show like it’s your last. The performance to the crowd is maybe the first time they’ve ever seen you. You’ve got to play to them like it’s the biggest show of your life. It’s quite easy to go on the road and forget that people pay money for tickets, and people are going to the really first show. You need to remind yourself of that every night. I think that’s a big thing for us.
