Pop/R&B Talent KOATES Shares Sincere Debut Single “Somebody New”
Jun 11, 2021
With a sonic palette that fuses elements of R&B, Pop and electro-pop, KOATES marks South London’s latest musical offering, and is bound to start resonating with international audiences very soon. The promising artist grew up around music, following his father’s steps, who performed as part of the band The Hollies. After joining multiple bands himself, KOATES has now been taken under the wing of Sarah Stennett (First Access) as a writer-artist, and is working with Gary Go (Harry Styles, Rihanna) and Grammy Award-winning Jimmy Hogarth (James Bay, Dermot Kennedy) in order to perfect his upcoming releases.
KOATES’ debut offering comes in the form of “Somebody New,” a brutally honest and personal song that details the artist’s inner thoughts of returning to an ex-lover. The single starts off with smooth piano chords and percussion tucked in the background, before exploding into an anthemic yet melancholic chorus that truly showcases KOATES’ impressive songwriting and vocal abilities.
Part radio-ready hit, part club anthem, the track’s irresistible dance groove combined with compelling vocal work is the perfect energizer. With a growing record of hits under their belt, KOATES’ radio-ready hit “Somebody New” can easily be seen climbing its way up the charts.
“I am a naturally nocturnal artist and for whatever reason I never question it, my best hours of creative songwriting come through the night and very often in my dreams. ‘Somebody New’ was no exception. I recorded my vocals in my room at 4am. I am a nightmare to live with. I wrote ‘Somebody New’ at a time when I found myself desperate to return to an ex-lover. I noticed that I was looking for her traits in everyone new that I met and the lyric ‘now I feel like all I do is try to find you in somebody new’ is for her. In fact it’s for all of us that we recognise that we may have made a big mistake,” says KOATES.
