#PopularPlay: ENZI

Music

Oct 9, 2020

Stand back ‘cause ENZI’s new track is anything but sweet! The Nashville alternative-pop star shows off her sultry vocals in the new song ‘Mad Chemistry’ and she serves it up with a flair of spice with lyrics flaunting “I don’t really like your girlfriend.”

ENZI’s interest in music began in early childhood when she was diagnosed at age four with Chiari Malformation and Syringomyelia, two brain conditions that had her hospitalized. Family and friends visited to play music and sing songs during her recovery and ENZI wrote her first song at 13.

Fast forward and ENZI may still be a student studying music at Belmont University, but she’s already got six singles under her belt! This latest release follows her last track, ‘Retrograde,’ which features her dynamic voice and a wistful instrumental.

Since her emergence in 2018, ENZI’s performed with bands The Head and the Heart, Fitz and the Tantrums, and Walk the Moon. Her debut single ‘Flipside‘ even won a top-five spot at iHeartRadio KTCL 93.3’s Big Gig in Colorado.

1. Tell us about your new single ‘Mad Chemistry’.

I use a lot of my writing as somewhat of a diary. I met this guy that I thought we clicked really well.. Surface level stuff really but I was convinced that we’d be a great match. Through chance, I also happened to meet his GIRLFRIEND! She was really sweet but a totally different personality and I had spent so much time convincing myself that this guy and I would be perfect that I almost couldn’t believe she was dating him. Long story short, she got the guy and I got this song!

2. How is juggling school with being a full-time artist?

Oh dear.. It’s quite hectic sometimes! I bounce between class and the studio and cowrites and homework all day long and sometimes an entire day will go by and it feels like it’s been 4 days because I’ve just done so much! And forget having a social life.. not like those exist nowadays!

3. Speaking of Zoom University – if you could add any class to the roster, what would it be?

Ooo okay.. like add one to my personal schedule? I don’t take enough electives that are just fun… i’m always working, doing homework.. so i might like to add an art class.. like pottery or something, that would be fun

4. Of all the singles you’ve released, which do you feel like you have the perfect music video idea for, and what is it?

Honestly… I think I’ve gotta say Mad Chemistry! Working with my creative team, we came up with this really cool and artsy idea for the song and i still can’t stop thinking about it.

5. Opening for Fitz and the Tantrums and Walk the Moon is an amazing accomplishment! How did the opportunity come about?

Yes! I still have to pinch myself haha. Both of the events were hosted by a local radio station in my hometown. they’re really big on uplifting local music so I submitted my songs to both contests and by some crazy thing, I won! I didn’t get to meet Walk the Moon but I did meet some of the members of Fitz and the Tantrums and they are some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. plus there were dogs in our green rooms… that was a fun bonding experience.

6. If there was one skill that you could instantly learn to help you with your artistry what would it be?

I’m currently learning how to produce my own demos. I think that’s just a really good skill for an artist/writer to have. Even if nothing on your demo makes the final mix, it makes the process go so much smoother when you can hand a tangible idea to someone.

7. What is a question you wish you got asked more?

Wow.. this is a good question. I wish I was asked more about the why behind my music. at the end of the day… I don’t write songs. I write stories. I want people to ask me about my stories.

8. When can fans expect your debut EP?

At the moment, I just plan on releasing singles that eventually will compile themselves into a full album. I’m also still exploring sounds. Making a cohesive EP wouldn’t feel right with my creative process right now. I’m very excited about the future of my sound and how it will evolve.
