#PopularPlay: Sophia Messa
Oct 15, 2020
The leaves are changing, the coast is cooling, and yet Sophia Messa teamed up with multi-platinum R&B singer-songwriter Pink Sweat$ for her newest single Made in one of the hottest songs of the year.
In a valiant effort to become the first fall hit of 2020, both Sophia and Pink Sweat$ collaborate in harmony over this new track. In an increasingly textured acoustic song, both artists sing to the tune of acceptance beyond familiarity.
Of the track, Sophia says, “’Made’ is about embracing everything about the way you are. The good, bad, and uncomfortable. Messing up in life and being able to accept and grow from that experience rather than bashing yourself. Everyone has qualities about themselves they don’t love, or qualities that society uses to treat you differently. Instead of feeling ashamed, we should all embrace how we were made. Every day you can only try to be the best version of you.”
‘Made’ also marks itself as the second track from Sophia’s upcoming debut EP “Ice Cream and Cigarettes” which is due later this year. The song precedes the projects titular track which has 400k+ streams across the board since its release falling behind her most popular track ‘moneydontfixlonely’ with over 10x as many at 4 million streams on Spotify alone.
Sophia talked to Popular TV about her newest release and the message she wants to send with her music.
1. Tell us about your new single ‘Made’.
I first heard “Made” when my executive producer Jenna Andrews played me the demo, and I immediately fell in love with it. We went into the studio, re-worked it, and really made it mine. I sent the song to Pink and he loved the message of the song, and decided to hop on.
2. You went to school at The Professional Performing Arts School and attended the Berklee College of Music for a few weeks before signing with Arista Records. How do you incorporate your background in classical training and opera in your music?
I don’t incorporate opera into most of my songs just because it doesn’t match the sound of my music all the time, but I will if I find it adds an element to the song that feels right and natural. One of those songs was my first song I ever put out: “moneydontfixlonely”
3. What do you want people to hear and take away from your writing/music?
I want people to feel empowered. In this time where people aren’t as inspired because we’re living in tough times, music is something that has been very healing for me and I hope my music can do that for others.
4. What’s one thing that was a challenge you had to overcome choosing this music path and how did it affect you and your writing?
Deciding to stay in school or dropping out. Putting all my eggs into one basket and fully committing was definitely scary for me, but every time I walk into a studio I am filled with so much gratitude to be writing music and doing what I truly love instead of being in class haha.
5. How has quarantine affected or changed the way you create music?
Quarantine has definitely affected the way I write music in a bigger way than I thought it would at first. I find myself thinking less about the nitty gritty of my writing, and lean more into whatever feels right. If the lyrics or melody provoke some kind of emotion in me, then I know it’s right.
6. What is a question you wish you got asked more?
“Do u want a massage?”
