Meet Vancouver’s Blonde Diamond! You can check out her new single Dark Place here: http://found.ee/darkplace

Blonde Diamond released her debut EP Feel Alright in 2016, which features five tracks. The first single and title track “Feel Alright” reached # 6 on the Spotify Viral Chart, with the EP itself nearing 1M streams to date. We got a chance to catch up with Blonde Diamond when she was in LA, and we asked her some of our exclusive questions.

What was your main inspiration for “Dark Place?”

Dark Place was written during a time that I just felt like I was in a black hole creatively and with my life, and it speaks to the masochistic tendency to want to repeat the same mistakes over and over again as a way of pressing the “self-destruct button” to find a way out and to start fresh.

What inspires you to be an artist?

I think that ultimately the reason why I feel inspired to create is that it’s my way of processing the consistent stream of consciousness that rattles around in my brain as a form of therapy. So initially, it’s actually quite selfish and self-serving. But the incredible thing about art is that the more personal you make something, the more universal it becomes and you have an ability to connect with other people on a deeper level, and that is really the best part about creating. It starts out with you feeling alone, and you end up feeling more connected to people.

If you could work with any artist – who would it be?

Definitely the French band Air. I’ve been obsessed with their studio magic for years, and anything they touch is painted with an incredible brush of a living and breathing soundscape.

What city is your favorite to perform in? Why?

We have had the fortune of performing in some truly incredible places around the world in the past year and a bit. I don’t think I could narrow it down to just one, but I think the top 3 would be Amsterdam (NL), Hamburg (GER), and Pune (India). Each place we felt really connected to the audience and felt like they really went above and beyond just attending a show. It felt like we made an actual impact there, and we weren’t just another band coming through and playing. Obviously I love Canada and the US, but I do feel like there’s a culture of it not being cool to show your appreciation, and I know that because I’m so guilty of it too. It’s incredibly refreshing to travel somewhere new and experience unbridled excitement and really not give a fuck if someone sees you enjoying yourself.

Karaoke Anthem?

Blue (Da Ba Di Da Ba Di) by Eiffel 65, because it’s a very polarizing song. If you get why it’s funny then you’re my kind of people. Also I know all the words and I can sing it in my sleep. It’s very embarrassing.

Favorite Song?

I’m clearly very indecisive, so I can’t pick just one, but if I had to pick 3 I would say:

Set Yourself on Fire by Stars

Anthems for a 17 Year Old Girl by Broken Social Scene

Because by the Beatles.

Favorite Movie?

Amelie.

Favorite snack?

POPCORN.

TV addiction?

Ru Paul’s Drag Race.

Dream concert ticket (any band, any decade)?

David Bowie. Absolutely gutted I never got to see him. Also, he’s the first celebrity that I openly bawled when I learned of his passing.

Three people—dead or alive, real or fictional—that you’d like to invite to dinner?

Bret Easton Ellis, James Baldwin, and Karen O.

Do you have a party trick?

Getting really drunk.

Tell us a secret?

I used to choreograph sword fights wearing capes LOTR style in my backyard as a teenager. Haha!

What does popular mean to you?

It means you stand for something that people are curious about and want to get to know you more.

Can you tell us about any shows or projects you have coming up?

I have a feature track with Sleepy Tom called In My Head coming out on August 10th, and our next EP titled Fantasy Love is coming out very soon!
