Sound Off: LIVVIA
May 13, 2020
Our favorite singer is here to talk about her career and her biggest dreams! We were honored to have LIVVIA as one of our guests at the Popular Festival – she made the moment extremely special for us and pretty hilarious with her quarantine rendition of “Say It” – and now she has taken some time to talk with Popular about her new single “Say It” and how it was being part of the Jonas Brothers’ Happiness Begins Tour. Can you believe she was a huge fan of theirs before? Things like this proves that anything is possible!
No more spoilers!
Let’s look at her interview!
1) Congrats on the Happiness Begins Tour! How did that come about?
Thank you so much! I had the best time! I’ve always been a huge Jonas Brothers fan, and we became friends years ago after meeting at a restaurant after one of their shows. Their family is some of my favorite people in the world! It was an honor to be even a part of such an amazing tour.
2) What city/venue was your favorite to perform in? Why?
The iconic O2 Arena in London was one of my favorite shows. We played there on 02/02/2020 to a sold-out crowd of 20,000 — and my dressing room was #20! Which all feels a little magical! I love the entire UK, so the whole UK leg of the tour was extremely special to me.
3) What is a misconception about the tour?
For the most part, it’s not as glamorous as people probably imagine, especially as an opening act. I also get absolutely no sleep because even after the show is over I still have so much adrenaline!
4) What can you tell us about your recent single “Say It”?
“Say It” is a song about speaking your mind and not holding back. It’s framed in a romantic context but can apply to so much more. I don’t like to rock the boat and avoid confrontation, so I’ve been working on being more assertive lately, and I hope this song has inspired and will inspire people to just say it.
5) How has your sound changed since “Catch a Body”?
My sound is and will always be evolving. Catch A Body was such a fun collaboration with the incredible Quavo and Rock Mafia. Say It has a similar danceable feel to it, but it’s much more subtle. They’re both empowering songs that encourage assertiveness.
6) What inspires you to be an artist?
I’m in love with the way music can capture a moment in time and bring you back to it whenever you hear that same song again, the way putting on a happy song can instantly lift your spirits, and the way the right sad song can make you feel understood.
7) If you could work with any artist – who would it be?
I’ve had the honor of working with amazing artists such as the Jonas Brothers and Quavo as we previously discussed. I’ve always dreamed of collaborating with Coldplay in some capacity!
8) Describe your sound in 3 words
Empowering, pop, and stories!
9) Musically, what is a dream you have fulfilled?
I’ve been lucky enough to have already fulfilled some significant dreams. Multiple songs on the top 40 chart, opening for some of my favorite artists (Jonas Brothers, Jessie J, and more), writing music with Nick Jonas, creating music videos that I visualized while writing the songs… It’s nice to look back and remember how far I’ve come since I’m always looking forward to the next accomplishment.
10) What made you major in Economics?
I would have double-majored in econ and history if I hadn’t been working in the music industry full time and traveling back and forth between LA and Berkeley. I love that econ is such a balanced mix between an art and a science, both theoretical and practical. People always ask me why, as a musician, I chose econ, but the music industry is a business like any other, and the principles of econ can be applied to any career or pursuit. I’m looking forward to continuing my education, getting my MBA, and studying the arts.
11) What has been a “Holy Crap? This is Happening?!” moment for you?
Those happen a lot! My favorite would have to be when I’m on stage in a packed beautiful arena and I look out at the sea of phone lights. It’s something I used to imagine when I was little looking out my window at all the little lights of the city and the stars above.
12) Favorite quarantine snack and activity?
Meditating and milkshakes (dairy-free!)
13) Tell us a secret?
I’m really jealous I’m not well known enough yet to have taken part in the celebrity re-readings of the Harry Potter audiobooks that they just started to release! I grew up on the original Jim Dale audiobooks and I’m still obsessed.
14) What does popular mean to you?
In general, I think the word popular describes things that many people can relate to and/or enjoy. But that doesn’t mean their appeal has to be universal — things can be popular among certain audiences or demographics, but not resonate with others.
15) Can you tell us about any shows or projects you have coming up?
I’m working on a couple of exciting projects at the moment. None I can speak too specifically about, unfortunately, but I will have some exciting news to share in a matter of weeks!
